Run This Town

August 29, 2009

Preface: Bear with me through this post though at first glance it may not seem like the usual Closet Ambitions fare. Trust me, it’s relevant!

One dedicated reader, who also happens to be my boyfriend, brought to my attention this music video for Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” which features Rihanna and Kanye.

Watch the video:

As you may or may not know these three characters have more in common than just music–namely a very big influence in the fashion industry. Their influence goes beyond the urban sphere and is actually more closely tied to Balmain than, say, Apple Bottom Jeans. Jay-Z even flows about Margiela in the second verse:

It’s the return of the god
Peace god…
And ain’t nobody fresher
I’m in Mason
Martin Margiela

In the video there are a couple of themes and sartorial choices going on that are worth noting:

  • The urban warfare imagery and the military trend is in full force, although you can see that the video’s take on this trend is more guerilla than regimented.
  • There is a sense of uniformity that is reinforced by the all-black wardrobe of the cast. Much like the army of stylists, publicists, and hair and makeup artists behind the scenes at fashion week, the supporting cast members are dressed entirely in head-to-toe black, following Jay-Z’s orders to “Get y’all black tees on/All black everything.”
  • Anonymity is also a prevailing theme mostly achieved through accessorizing. Impenetrable accessories including black sunglasses, hats worn low and bandanas are used to mask and protect.

Of course, while watching the video I kept my eyes mostly glued to Rihanna and her outfit choices. Throughout the video she’s like one of the boys with her arrogant posturing and her low, throaty sound on the hook, but stylistically she retains an air of feminity even in tough leather ensembles. In my favorite outfit, her eyes peak out from underneath a short black veil, adding a ladylike Parisian feel to an otherwise hard, edgy look. So while I’m not a fan of Rihanna’s personal street style, I think she looks fierce in this video.

Not to mention, I really like the song.
