Met Costume Institute Gala 2009

May 5, 2009

What a night for fashion. As with all red carpet events, some attendees dazzled and others fizzled. I’m not interested in criticizing the fashion misses so let’s just take a look at the hits shall we?

These confident ladies chose to stand out from the crowd in bold, bright hues. I think it’s important to note that colors this eye-catching usually look best in form-fitting silhouettes as seen here. Otherwise they can look a little bit outrageous.

L-R: Rachel Bilson in Bally, Bee Schaffer in Nina Ricci, Amber Valletta in vintage James Galanos and Anna Jagodinska in Altuzarra

The theme of the night was “Model as Muse” so it’s only appropriate that these designers walked the red carpet with their model muses. These models know how to put their own spin on the classic little black dress. That’s what makes today’s models different than their predecessors. There’s an expectation for models to have their own style, not just to be walking mannequins. Great legs are an asset too, case in point:

L-R: Sasha Pivovarova in Giambattista Valli (with the designer), Daria Werbowy in Balmain and Lily Donaldson in Narciso Rodriguez (with the designer)

I think white was the dominant color this year. Lots of fabulous white dresses, both short and long.

L-R: Diane Kruger in Chanel, Catherine McNeil in Roland Mouret and Anne V. in Peter Som

L-R: Ashley Olsen in The Row, Flavia de Oliveira in Zac Posen and Caroline Trentini in John Galliano

And lastly, these two knockouts may have found it a bit difficult to walk, but that’s the price they pay to look this gorgeous.

L-R: Emmy Rossum in Carolina Herrera and Kate Beckinsale in Marchesa

Emmy Rossum’s dress is my favorite.
