Are you an Anna or a Carine?

March 17, 2009

For those of you in the know, I’m totally a Carine.

For those of you not in the know, some background:

Anna Wintour is the powerful, long-standing and immutable Editor-in-Chief at American Vogue which boasts a circulation of over 1 million (strong numbers in this print media downturn). Carine Roitfeld is the younger, seemingly more free-spirited fashionista at the helm of French Vogue. Anna has what is the strictest definition of ‘signature style.’ Her look is unwavering–furs, large sunglasses, that infamous bob haircut. Carine is more adventurous with her looks and yet always fabulous and stylish. In my opinion, they can do no wrong. If you don’t think either woman’s style, it’s because you don’t get it. We’re not worthy!

So are they friends or foes, competitors or collaborators? Whichever is the case the most interesting dynamic of this relationship is the real or perceived rivalry between these two fashion powerhouses. Rumors have been floating around for a while now about the possibility of Carine replacing Anna at American Vogue as Anna nears retirement.

This is the latest news on that:
Roitfeld: American Vogue job ‘not for me’

So based on the looks of that photo op and the quotes from Carine they seem pretty chummy no? But fashionista’s are all about public image. Smiles, real or fake, are just another accessory.

Update: Just had a thought, maybe their relationship is something like that of Blair and Serena? Queen B being Wintour, of course, and the free-spirited ‘it’ girl gene clearly shared by S and C. The best of friends (a stretch for Anna and Carine, I realize) but also fiercely competitive. No? Not seeing the parallels?

Ha. I’m such a teeny-bopper sometimes.
